Historically, in most cultures, this is not exactly true. Human cultures tend to look to the past as a better time, a time of greatness, a golden age, the good old days, the time of the ancestors. Traditionally what was past was good, something to be emulated, and what was new was shocking and bad. Western culture, especially the US, created an obsession with the new only relatively recently, but the “old ways” are still favored everywhere else. Even in the US and the West, we constantly hear those who crave and defend a mythologized past, whether libertarians who want to return to the 19th Century or Christian nuts who want to take us back to the mid 20th.
I don’t know about “Space and Place”, or this commentary, but I do know that that dotted circle of immediate future is most definitely sacred (read: no one interfere under any circumstances).
